How to Get a Good Tattoo

(Part 1)

Getting your first tattoo can be very intimidating. However, it can also be a very enlightening and enjoyable experience. The key to making it an exciting and memorable experience is in finding the right artist and studio for the job. Like anything else that involves a long-term commitment, it’s important to do your homework when choosing your tattoo studio.

The first thing to remember is that a tattoo is a permanent mark on your body and it is important to find a responsible and talented artist to perform the task. When choosing the proper studio it is a good idea to follow a few very simple guidelines. The first thing to consider is whether or not the studio is clean and well lit. Smoking, dirty floors, and overflowing garbage cans are sure signs of uncleanliness. Notice if you are greeted when you enter the studio and if the artists are personable. You want an artist who is willing and knowledgeable enough to answer any questions that you may have. There are no stupid questions. Next, ask to view the artist’s portfolio of their tattoo work. The portfolio should be neat and professional. Take time to watch the artist work observing not only the work they are doing but also their sterile techniques. These techniques include wearing gloves, covering areas that are touched during the tattoo, new sterilized needles, and disposable ink containers per customer.

Where do you start when looking for a studio? Many people begin by looking in the Yellow Pages and visiting each shop. One of the best ways is by asking around, don’t be afraid to approach people and inquire about their tattoos. If you like the way their tattoo looks, let them know. They will more than likely be happy to tell you who did it, where it was done, and probably more information than you care about. Be patient and find an artist that you are comfortable with.

Another option for finding an artist to do a tattoo is by attending a tattoo convention. Every year there are a number of tattoo conventions that are held in various parts of the country. Artist from around the world come together at these conventions and practice their craft. This is a great place to get a tattoo from someone you wouldn’t normally be able to. Every Halloween New Orleans is host to the Tattoo Voodoo Convention, held at the Landmark Hotel in Metairie. This year it will be held from October 28 thru October 31. There will be artists from around the world as well as tattoo contests and other entertainment. Everyone is welcome, for a small entrance fee. It’s opened daily until 11:00pm. Remember, the rules are the same for finding a studio, look at each artist’s portfolio and observe them work before getting tattooed by them.

We hope this information helps you have a great tattoo experience and not one that you'll regret.

(Part 2)

Hopefully, now you have found a respectable tattoo artist and studio. Your next decision will probably be choosing the design for your tattoo. Many people can walk into a studio and choose a design off the wall but then there are those who want to design their own special tattoo. Custom tattoos are great because they allow you to express your personal creativity. Considerations in design are: size of the tattoo, placement of the tattoo, and finally the subject matter itself.

The size of the tattoo is a major component. For example, if the design is very detailed then you would not want the tattoo to be too small. The reason for this is because the skin stretches and shrinks over time and small detail will blur if it is done too small. The next aspect to consider is the placement of the design. Size, along with the shape, of the design should fit the area where you would like your tattoo placed. For instance, the chest accepts a circular design easily whereas a lower back piece might flow across your hips. In the same instance you would not want a tiny tattoo placed in the middle of a large area, such as the middle of the back. This allows the tattoo to flatter that part of the body as much as it possibly can. Following these considerations the tattoo will flow and fit that particular part of the body which makes the design that much more attractive.

Finally we come to the subject matter of the design which many believe is of the most importance. However, as we have just shown, this is just one step in choosing the best tattoo for you. Many people choose subjects that have deep personal meanings, while others choose designs because they simply like them. Both are good reasons for getting a tattoo. However, some of you may still not know what tattoo you want. To help trigger your creative energy try visiting a tattoo studio and simply browse through the designs on their walls. Always remember when looking for a design you should be able to work with the artist and let them help you with the designing process. Remember they are the professional and should be able to guide you through this process. It is at this point that you can explain your idea or you may want to bring in examples of your idea. Remember to take your time. There is no point in rushing something that will be with you for the rest of your life!

Remember these three aspects of choosing your design and you will be sure to get a tattoo that you will be proud to show off.

Phoenix Tattoos

Phoenix are a very popular tattoo design. Phoenix made as phoenix tribal tattoos or phoenix
Celtic tattoos are also very popular.

Phoenix Tattoos - the legendary mythological bird of fire, is probably the most popular
of all the rebirth and resurrection symbols. There are stories and fables that touch on the
Phoenix myth in the ancient Middle East, India, China and the Greek and Roman Empires.
In the myth the Phoenix is an extraordinarily long-lived bird of great beauty and luxuriant
plumage (often described as golden or red-hued), living five hundred years or more, a
fact attributed by one early Jewish legend that the Phoenix refused to eat the forbidden
fruit of Paradise. At the end of it's life the Phoenix would build a nest of aromatic twigs,
set fire to itself, and be consumed in the funeral pyre of it's own making. After three days
the Phoenix would arise from the ashes, reborn.
The Phoenix was originally a symbol of the cycle of the rising and setting of the sun but
over time evolved to become a symbol of human resurrection. On Roman coins the phoenix
represented an undying Empire. In the early Christian Church the phoenix was a symbol of
Christ's resurrection and everlasting life. The phoenix represented the victory of life over
death.
As a tattoo symbol, the Phoenix can be found in many tattoo genres, but of the Far East
in particular. It is a symbol of resurrection, rebirth and regeneration. It also represents
purification and transformation through fire and adversity.
